How to register for an NTN in Pakistan, step by step (2026)

Your National Tax Number (NTN) is the single most important credential in Pakistan's tax system. Without it, you cannot file a return, appear on the Active Taxpayers List, or access lower withholding tax rates on everyday transactions like banking, property, and vehicles. Yet for most people, the registration process feels more complicated than it needs to be. Here's a clear walkthrough.

Who actually needs an NTN?

You need an NTN if you fall into any of these categories

  • You are a salaried individual earning above the taxable threshold
  • You run a business, freelance, or earn income from self-employment
  • You own property, vehicles, or investments that generate income
  • You want to be added to the Active Taxpayers List to access reduced withholding tax rates
  • You are a company, AOP, or partnership required to register under the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001

Even if your income is currently below the taxable threshold, registering early is often a smart move — it means you're already set up in the system once your income grows, and it can reduce withholding tax deducted on bank transactions, vehicle purchases, and property dealings.

Documents you will need

For individuals

  • Original CNIC
  • A personal mobile number registered in your own name (verified via SIM database)
  • A personal email address
  • Your residential address

For salaried individuals, you will also typically need your employer's NTN and address. For business owners, you'll additionally need your business name, nature of business, business address, and bank account details in the business or personal name.

Step-by-step: registering through IRIS

  1. Visit the FBR IRIS portal and select 'Registration for Unregistered Person'.
  2. Fill in your CNIC, name, and contact details exactly as they appear on your CNIC — mismatches are the most common cause of rejected applications.
  3. Verify your mobile number and email through the OTP codes sent to each.
  4. Once verified, you will receive login credentials (usually your CNIC as the user ID) via SMS and email.
  5. Log into IRIS and complete the '181 Registration Form', adding your income source details, employer or business information, and bank account.
  6. Submit the form. In most straightforward cases, your NTN is generated immediately upon submission.

Common mistakes that cause delays

  • Entering your name differently than it appears on your CNIC (including spacing and spelling)
  • Using a mobile number not registered in your own name
  • Selecting the wrong taxpayer category (e.g. selecting 'business individual' when you are actually salaried)
  • Leaving the bank account section incomplete

After you have your NTN

Getting your NTN is only the first step. You still need to file an annual income tax return every year to appear on the Active Taxpayers List (ATL) — simply having an NTN without filing does not make you an active filer, and you may still face higher withholding tax rates and a late filing penalty under section 182 if you miss the deadline.

If you'd rather not deal with the back-and-forth of IRIS verification yourself, our team handles NTN registration for individuals, salaried employees, and businesses end-to-end — including matching your details correctly the first time to avoid delays. Get in touch and we'll take care of it.
